I wouldn't say people are dumb, just busy
If you're the average joe receiving 100 emails per day, it's easy to click on a link on what appears to be a legitimate email without thinking. People need to get into the groove of being suspicious by default, not trusting by default. Make it easy on yourself. If it asks you to log-in or verify something, stop and check it out in more detail.

Check out http://www.phishfraud.com. It's a free service to quickly check an email to see if it is fraudulent. Works every time!
