OK...I'm Convinced
Lemmee just break tradition here and actually provide a compliment to you as a fellow poster for ingenuity above and beyond the call of inconsequential blatherings. I guess I must have missed your other posts on that subject, so thanks for taking the time to reply.

I hafta tell ya, alien, I can't find any holes in your solution. I suspect that there probably are some holes somewhere, but there aren't any gaping ones that I can see. You've pretty clearly identified the biggest impediment, namely the startup friction in getting folks to change their habits.

If mail service providers want to expedite that process, they're going to have to come up with a very user-friendly way of getting identity-trusted digital certs. Right now, that's still not anywhere near as straightforward as it will need to be for universal usage. The requirement to appear in person before a certifying authority's agent will probably deter a lot of people.

Maybe a good intermediate step would be a simpler requirement for just the e-mail address-verified digital cert, without identity trusting. That process could use some user-friendlyfying too, but it's gotten a whole lot better. To my knowledge the easiest way of getting free personal e-mail certs is at the following sites:

http://www.cacert.org/

http://www.thawte.com/email/index.html

Of course, there are any number of issuers who will sell you a cert for ≥$20.00 per year, but I've found Thawte's Personal Freemail certs to work just fine.
