"Dehumanizing the enemy or the oppoinent as they might NOT even be a true enemy in the pre-emtive war fare days that will follow this conflict."

But it's already being done -- witness the Palestinian suicide bombers in Israel, for example. The targets are not military; they are schools and shops and buses -- children and women and men just going about their lives. So how do you combat an enemy who has already de-humanized you? If Israel were to completely pull out of all of the disputed areas, will its enemies be satisfied? If the U.S. were to halt all military operations everywhere and bring all its people back home, would the rest of the world be satisfied? How can the U.S. balance isolationism and involvement?

It's all well and good to say, "We're big enough, we can take a few hits". Try saying that to the faces of those who have lost loved ones to such attacks. Do we really want terrorism to be just a "nuisance"? Do we really want to devalue human life to the point where we can "take" a few losses, as long as we don't upset the rest of the world?

How does a country defend itself against those who have no conscience?
