- screensaver needs option to send MORE data!
-
NOW, there are some differing viewpoints on this idea, one is from the Spamhaus people:
"It's irresponsible of Lycos to put its name to it because it lends legitimacy to [DDoS] attacks," said Linford. "You can't break into a thief's house just because he breaks into yours. We don't support this or recommend this practice. Directing traffic is part of the degradation of the internet we are trying to stop."
i however, completely disagree with this nutjob. i personally dont think this goes far enough. i PERSONALLY think that a process should be implimented thusly:
1. spammers get tracked down
2. through a review of the evidence they are shown to be spammers
3. they are dragged out into the street where "justice" is administered by those who won the lottery on ebay to do so. (Kick a spammers balls till he coughs up blood! bidding starts at 25 cents.)
until my plan is implimented and seen as the glorious plan that it is, i decided to check out the screensaver. it's available to anyone, not just lycos people, and is on limited "test" release currently. since i always try out any sort of software before reccomending it, i installed it on my secondary computer to try it out, and make sure that it didn't give me any sort of problems, or strange activity that i didn't like.
VERDICT: it's actually pretty cool!
you get this lil graphic of the world, and a lil red line from your 'puter ZIPS out and SMACKS into a red dot somewhere in the world that represents a spamming web address. you see all the stats, how much you've contributed, what address you're hitting, how much of the spam address's bandwidth is left, yadda yadda, it sends out requests about once every 2-3 seconds, and is set to use a MAXIMUM of 3.4 meg of your bandwidth in a 24 hour period (same as downloading a metallica mp3, except cool).
i think i'm going to install this on AALL my puters, just so that i can do my lil part, i just wish there were some way i could set it to use 100 meg of my bandwidth a day... or... if there was a lil button that said "kick spammer in the balls? enabled/disabled" that would be pretty cool to. - Posted by: Valis Keogh Posted on: 11/30/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
