Hmmm... I rarely see applets anymore, it's true, but the reason for that isn't that they aren't being used: They're used all over the place, to do things like mediate secure connections, or facilitate HTTP turnarounds without having to reload a page. They get used a lot in the development of sophisticated secure interfaces, like web-based financial apps.

Advocating a switch to Macromedia tools would be one acceptable answer, but you're still then faced with the monoculture problem.
