Are you then in favor of anarchy?

Like it or not, power does have to be granted, even though some will abuse it. I'm not suggesting that people be jailed without evidence, only that it is the business of the police not only to investigate crimes that have already happened, but also planned criminal activity.

In the case of the subject at hand, we're talking about publicly available information. Anyone with the know how and resources can do what the CIA is proposing to do (it's even legal)... even terrorists and other criminals as an aid to their activities; so why should government types be prohibited from doing so as well?

I'm not arguing that this program is a good use of government funds. As stated by others, real terrorists aren't likely to use chat rooms for anything but propaganda and recruitment. There is, however, nothing wrong with government types using publicly available information to carry out their legitimate functions. It certainly doesn't constitute a general search.
