The new zdnet talkback seems to have a limit of the
number of replies per message thread so
hopefully we can continue here.
"Wow! That's the same thing my Aunt Edna does! She
mounts a file system for her user's home account with
"noexec." Then she knows that she's safe from accidentally
opening any email attachments.
Then, if she gets a legitimate email attachment that is
executable, she first saves the attachment to disk, uses the
su command to attain admin privileges, then uses chmod
to set the executable attribute on the file.
The only thing she wishes she had is a good virus scanner
for Linux.
She's a real *nix whiz for being 60, let me tell ya!"
I'm sorry but I'm, confused by your post. Is Aunt Edna an
expert or not? If she is she'd know that even using the su
command to set the executable bit is insignificant as she'd
still have to unmount the filesystems and remount without
"noexec". She'd know at work the admins would not grant
her access to the root password. If she isn't an expert and
at home what makes you think she'd by using su or chmod
in the first place?
Time to admit that he security model for *nix is vastly
superior to windows, that the features exist to make *nix
vastly more resistant to virii than windows (particularly in a
managed enterprise environment), that even if *nix became
everyones preferred platform virus writers would have a
vastly harder time writing virii for this platform than
windows, and that the *nix platform offers excellent and
vastly superior protection from "stupid users" than
windows. - Posted by: Richard Flude Posted on: 12/01/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
