Turning off the java reminder popups
A lot of programs, including QuickTime and Kodak Easyshare just to name two that come to mind immediately, have built in reminder programs that start up with Windows and check for updates or remind the user to check for them.

I prefer to control what uses my bandwidth. I could search through each program and turn off the feature. But that can take a while, and some programs, like WeatherBug, do not give you the option of taking them out of the startup list.

I could use msconfig to get these programs out of the startup list, but that's not too convenient, and at least for a while XP showed a screen saying StartUp was modified.

So I use a free program called StartUp Inspector for Windows which has the advantage of providing details and advice about each listing. The information is provided by program users, and has been reliable where I checked.

I know you know this solution, but there may be someone here who can benefit from the information.
