The "Patching" in question wasn't security related, however
In the days before plug-in style modules, you had
to obtain source code "patch" files and apply
them to your server to obtain extra functionality
like SSL, CGI, etc. By about 1995, a number of
these patches had been developed for the freely
available NCSA server under a BSD style license.
Brian Behlendorf started collecting these patches
together, and the first versions of Apache were
made available as a series of these patches he'd
collected, together with Robert Thau's newly
created Shambala server subsystem. Apache has
since been the most widely used webserver since
it overtook the NCSA server sometime in the
middle of 1996.
