Stupidity and Cutting Corners
My wife and I were in Montreal the night of the blackout. The city (and most of the province of Quebec) was unaffected.

The next morning, we had 9:30am reservations on Air Canada for a non-stop flight to Los Angeles. We arrived at Lorval Airport (now Trudeau Airport) before 7:00am to check-in. After standing in line for almost 2 hrs, we were informed that all flights were cancelled.

Air Canada's computers were all in Toronto and crashed during the blackout. No UPS to allow graceful shutdowns for immediate restart when emergency power was supplied. No remote backups in Vancouver or Halifax to take over.

While other airlines were taking off and landing at Lorval Airport, Air Canada could not verify reservations or issue boarding passes. No wonder they are in bankruptcy.
