Because we work on win2k server at work I switched to firefox to browse because of the neat features such as tabbed browsing and pop up blocker. At home i have xp so I have no need to switch.
Why is WinXP better than Win2K? Microsoft isn't releasing new patches for Win2k, and evidently, the patching for WinXP doesn't fix much either. Yes, you might get the pop-up blocker with later patches of IE ... but you still don't get tabbed browsing without a 3rd party add-on.
We are coming across problems with activeX errors and problems with java servlets.
Java servelets are server-based (thus the name) and have nothing directly to do with any browser because they run on the web server. If they are spitting out faulty IE-only HTML to your browser, that would be an issue with the vendor or programmer. And ActiveX only runs in IE -- it's a Microsoft only technology.
One major issue is that firefox does not work with mercury test director that is pureley java applet based.
Check the version of the JVM. Also, be sure that it doesn't require the Microsoft JVM. I've seen applets specifically written for the Microsoft JVM -- unfortunately, Microsoft isn't allowed to distribute it any more. Of course, there are differences between several versions of Sun's JVM too.
Another example is that after installing all the plugins I am still getting when browsing zdnet.com a reocurring error "activeX error: cannot create control (0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000} check that it is referenced.
ActiveX doesn't run in any other browser but IE. I'm wondering if you have the plug-ins setup correctly. I don't see anything on ZDNet that would kick off an ActiveX control -- except maybe Shockwave or the movie clips.
I still am an IE fan but switched to firefox to force ms to create an IE update for windows 2000.
Good thought ... but I don't think that they will do it. Anybody owns 96% of anything, can pick and choose who and what they support. - Posted by: coffeenite Posted on: 11/18/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
