Re : Ignorance
Actually you do have the same situations in Linux..

Ports are open by default in some distributions and you have to close them yourself. Or all of it is locked by activating the Firewall which makes it a hassle opening it up again (From a User point of view). You can do the same yourself in Windows if you have enough knowledge.

As for Email. Take Ximian on Linux and the well documented bug that brought the program crashing down. It would depend on your email client you use. There are plenty of good Email clients on the Windows platforms that aren't executable happy. Using the default one (or free one) is what causes the most pain.

I do believe that given enough volume for Virii writers, Linux would present a better target when used as a Desktop OS. There are many exploits that when not patched (and we are talking about MOM and DAD using Linux here, not Computer Engineering Scientists) give su rights and can cripple and damage the system.

Blaming the OS shouldn't be the end all. Considering Windows source code is closed, all the damage that is being done should be an eye opener to what could happen when the source code is open. Sure it means faster noticing of problems but it also means exploiting potential problems by those who don't care for a better OS. And who is going to make sure that the problems are fixed everywhere?

Interesting thoughts anyone?
