Re: Linux is a responsible OS
You know, in a perfect world, every computer user would be a computer science major and know unix in and out. But where I live, that's not the case, so until Linux is as easy to manage as Windows, businesses are going to stick with the Wintel combination. You can tell me how my systems are prone to viruses and security breaches, but with a properly configured firewall and up-to-date antivirus software installed, we encounter very few problems.

Linux will probably contiunue to gain ground in the workstation market (and that's fine with me - competition is a good thing), but when that happens, don't be surprised if we start to see more and more viruses being written to affect it.

As for the Mac, it's a fine machine if you don't mind paying more, having fewer software choices, and virtually no other hardware choices. When I worked in a university environment a few years back (ok, 10) I supported quite a few Macs, and we had continuous viral infections. Because Apple hadn't fallen all the way into niche status yet, losers were still writing viruses for them. At the same time, I had 500 PCs running without any problems. Now that they've become a niche product, why would anyone bother to write a virus to affect such a low number of computers?

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Microsoft shill, and I'm disappointed in the number of bugs in their code, but until something comes along that's better for my work environment and the users I support, I'm going to continue using their products.

Regards,
Alan
