I personally like it up front and out ASAP, as I don't trust my vendor_of_choice with my personal data. Sure I expect them to fix the vulnerability, but I am not going to place all my eggs in one basket. With the info, I can atleast take my own precautions and not have to depend solely on the vendor.

And that whole "the hackers will know" bit, how do you know that the hacker community doesn't already know the bug and just hasn't told anyone? How do you know they aren't exploiting it? They might not be doing it on a large scale, but maybe against one or two PCs (like a bank's!). The knowledge might get the interest of the script kiddies, but I will know too and thus can take my own actions.
