Microsoft thinks all users are computer professionals
Microsoft must think that all users of IE are computer professionals. First, most casual users probably don't even KNOW that the URL appears in the status bar. Second, how many times have you clicked on a LEGITIMATE URL only to be redirected to a different URL once you've reached the target website?

You should NEVER be able to redirect to a different URL from within a single hyperlink. If this weren't possible, you would have to at least visit the intended URL (the one that appears in the status bar) before the URL's web page redirects you.
