Agreed but the bug is the tag
The fact that this will work:

ZDNet

Even without the window.status bit, the above would leave user confusion.
The HTML standard allows for this.
As you said window.status is a feature, you can't expect it to be able to validate URLs, if that's what's inside the text. Same for the tag.
Not sure I would even consider it a bug.
