Right on the head again
Take hotmail for example, MS paid a ton of money for one of Brightmail's antispam systems to try and keep spam from coming into people's hotmail accounts. That's all well and good, except they then started offering to let companies "bypass" the filters, in exchange for a nominal fee. So companies pay MS to get added to the whitelist in their hotmail antispam system, and therefore are allowed to spam hotmail users. All MS really did, is take an existing problem, and without actually making it go away, found a way to profit from it. Pretty clever, and that is probably why they are where they are today.

I'm sure they have employed a similar strategy in regards to their software products, after all, its bad business to make a perfect software product that has no problems, because how else will you ever get people to pay to upgrade?
