I voted early, electronically. It's primed for FRAUD

Tuesday I used the convenience of early voting in Livingston parish. I was introduced to the latest version of the electronic voting machine. It is very easy to use. It is so easy that I really believe that anyone who requires help should be disqualified from voting.

However, I remained to discuss the operation of the system with the Registrar of Voters. It was then that I discovered what I believe is a fatal flaw in the design of the electronic system.

IT HAS NO BACKUP. A RECOUNT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

The Registrar of Voters disagreed with me on this point as he claimed that he could reread the record in the computer. I disagree with this for the following reasons.

1.) All of the record is within the computer that is used to present the choices to the voter.

2.) Even though the computer presents a screen to the voter that displays the votes cast, there is NO method of verifying that the computer has recorded what it presents to the voter as his or her vote which will be recorded.

3.) There is NO way to restore votes should any particular computer have a failure in the storage device that records the vote.

We should all immediately request that our state legislature require a verifiable paper trail be created to provide assurance that the vote recorded is what was cast. One way to do this is to provide printers and ballot boxes at each computer station Print the vote for verification by the voter. Print 2 copies please, one for the voter and one for the trail record. The voter, after verifying the record is what was cast will keep one copy and feed the other copy into the ballot box. a trip lever in the ballot box will then initiate recording of the vote onto the storage device.

Electronic voting can be use with security, reliability, accuracy, and reviewability. This current system has NO reviewability, and NO verification of any other requirement. It must be fixed.
