On RFID

I have voiced in this forum my protest to what I would classify as regardless acceptance of RFID, without expressed consideration of the opportunities for misuse and abuse - maybe not today but sooner than most would expect.

So I don't want RFID thrown out, just examined and respected from the viewpoint of some of the end-users (the consumer). In a warehouse or in a stockroom, its a great tech to employ, much better than barcode, . . but once a product leaves the confines of where that RFID tag was created to assist inventory, it should die or be removed as to never be a problem and/or pest to the end consumer of said products. Jenny's new blouse should not be RFID lively the second, days and months after her purchase, prone to weak scanners today and more powerful, if not hacked versions tomorrow. How many ppl want a future where your clothing and other products get targeted advertisements popping up unsolicited in stores, on their televisions, or billboards as fantasized in some futuristic movies? Lo jacked by RFID.

If people want to embed such tech in themselves or their children, for location search and rescue in the cases of med emergency or abduction, fine for them (its a great use). I see such tech as dual edged. Great in emergencies, a terror if coopted for dubious purposes by lawful and unlawful bodies (but that's more tomorrow). It should be used, it should be respected, and it should implemented wisely.

If in places where ppl are vocal against it, then retailers and the RFID supporters need to voice what checks and balances are in place and build toward a tomorrow that envisioned protecting from the get go, not the oops better late than never.
