No email program is safe if you open an infected attachment.

Opening attachments, "infected" or not, is harmless. There are any number of mail programs (Thunderbird, KMail, GMail, Evolution, PINE, ...) which open attachments safely regardless of what's in them, because they don't make the incredibly stupid association of "open" with "run."

The "Good Times Virus" story used to be a big laugh on the Internet. Apparently some morons thought it would be a good idea to make a mail program that would actually play the joke!
