For those that MIGHT care...
Old Terms:
HACKER= One who makes changes/modifies code or hardware to make enhancements.
Ex 1: "This code was cr*p, so I hacked it to make it work better."
Ex 2: "This thing used to be a toaster, but I hacked that baby to broadcast radio signals."
CRACKER= One who gains unauthorized access into a system. Modifications are generally not made, unless for malicious purposes.

New Terms:
WHITE HAT HACKER= One who attempts to gain unauthorized access to test a system's security.
BLACK HAT HACKER= One who attempts to gain unauthorized access to a system's security for malicious intent.
CRACKER= Something you eat with soup.

In time, the meaning of words change. Mitnick was a 'cracker' back in the day. The media, along with the ubiquity of new users following the misinterpretations of the media, have changed the meaning of these words and created new ones.
Sorry, that's just the way it is. 20 years from now, few will even remember 'cracker'. 'Hacker' might not even exist, as it is being replaced by 'Haxor'.
