Why do companies take so long?
I don't know about everybody else, but I can tell you why *we* haven't installed them...

Our standard desktop template (the one that is put on every desktop and laptop when it is first loaded) has over 27 different applications on it. And that's only what we start with - tossing in all the applications that are unique to separate business units, this number changes to over seventy. In order for us to deploy a new application to the template like, say, anti-spyware tools, we need to test every single one to make sure that the existing applications' performance is unaffected by new tool. This takes a lot of time and staff that, frankly, we don't have.

This is why it takes us a couple of weeks (or more) to deploy new service packs. This is also why we aren't on XP and are two versions back on Office.

You can pontificate all you want to about how companies that don't deploy all of the latest and greatest security stuff are either unsophisticated or criminally negligent, but the reality is that computers here are used to support the business, not the other way around. There are some times that I've had to make security decisions that I really didn't like because chosing otherwise would cause an application that is critical to a business function to fail. Yes, we eventually got to where we need to be to increase security, but we can't always do it as quickly as we would like. This is reality - we're here to support the business, not the other way around.
