Firewalls
I don't remember ABM's whining about MS integrating firewalls because they would put firewall companies out of business. I remember them crowing about how weak it was.

"A firewall is necessary for ANY computer connected to the internet."

If you have no listening services, you don't absolutely need a firewall. With open source OS, like Linux or *BSD, you can control exactly which daemons you want to have running, and can choose NO daemons if you so desire. There is no difference between having no program listening to a port and having the port blocked, except the returned error messages. With windows NT, 2k, and XP, you cannot shut off many services, which makes firewalls very very important.

If you want to run a limited service on an open source platform, you can just keep your box patched and well-configured. A firewall is useful, provides a good level of redundancy, and is a good idea. However, it is not "necessary."
