To begin with
In my case we deal with client files that pretty much require we stay on a Windows platform. We need version tracking of our Word and Excel documents for example, and we also have several small departmental Access databases. The cost of antivirus software pales compared to the costs associated with switching platforms.

Does Microsoft have poorer security than most of the alternative OSs. You bet. Never said it didn't. However, since we are talking a corporate environment the users do not have any admin privelages and don't know the admin password. The login permissions they do have do not allow them to install software. We're also behind a good corporate firewall. But being Windows I still make sure antivirus software is installed and kept up to date. The corporate version of the antivirus software I use requires very little administration. Once it's installed on the desktop (which can be done remotely) it's just a matter of monitoring. Which means visiting the web based console a couple times a day and making sure pattern files are going out and no viruses were detected. Even if we were on a non-Windows platform, with the files we exchange with clients I'd still want some form of antivirus software that would catch any infected files before we then sent them off to someone else.

As to support and compatibility problems, assuming you're still talking about the antivirus software, I haven't had any. (Knock wood! ;)) If you're talking machines in general, tell me a platform that requires no support.

How do I know it's catching all the spyware and malware. Can't say for certain that it is. But while supporting the users other problems I have to visit their machines occasionally and I keep my eye open for suspicious activity. So far so good...
