But they can
The average home user CAN get another OS for free, the options are available. I mentioned them getting another car for free, as that was what the original anology was, cars to OS's. And if your OS is "defective" there are plenty of alternatives that offer the same "features" that are essentially FREE(*nix based, BeOS, FreeBSD, etc). Their inability to actual download or pickup the new OS and get it installed and up and running, is their own problem. Alternatives are available, the general public is just too lazy to put any kind of effort into setting up and using a computer, because it is not a "priority" for them. They know in advance all of the shortcomings of Windows, but they buy it anyway, despite what they KNOW TO BE TRUE about it. Why should MS shoulder the blame, because people WILLINGLY buy a product they know to be flawed and susceptible to these kinds of problems. Even though MS claims their product is great, ask anyone with a Windows box, if they knew windows had problems before they bought the computer, even if all the sales people told them it was problem-free. End users are lazy about computers and learning how to use them, but they aren't stupid. They know the stuff has problems. I cannot even tell you how many people I have met that complained about how their Windows computer crashes 5-6 times a day and its just aweful and they keep getting viruses and spyware, and then 3-6 months down the line, they go out and buy a brand new computer, with WINDOWS on it. End users know, believe me.

To go back to the original example, I don't know the first thing about how to fix or repair cars, outside of the normal maintainence stuff. I could learn how to do it, it would take alot of time and practice, but I could certainly learn how to do it, but I CHOOSE not to, because its not important to me. As such, and despite what car dealerships will tell you, American-Made cars have reliability problems (they have gotten better in recent years), and that is why I drive a non-american made car, because I don't want to have to take the time to learn how to fix it when it breaks, I'd rather just have something that doesn't break. If I did buy an american-made car, and it broke down, its my own d@mn fault, not the manufactures, cause I knew before I bought it was going to do that. If you are too lazy or irresponsible to own a computer, than you shouldn't be using Windows, go buy a Mac instead.
