Must be a different Gartner
The one I'm thinking of makes wild statements like:

According to Gartner, by 2008 Linux desktops -- which the research firm boldly says could attain as much as 30 percent market share -- will have about the same number of viruses as Windows desktops.

You can disagree about the viruses. And I don't think you'd be wrong. If almost all Linux machines are business devces with limited functions, they can be locked down pretty tightly. Maybe unhappy employees, but secure.

The real nonsense, though, is a 30% market share after the issuance of Longhorn. I think if Microsoft promoted Linux use, they couldn't ensure a 30% share. The home market is pretty much a lost cause; haven't heard anyone saying Linux has a chance for substantial success there. In the business market, the cost of conversion is high, and I don't see any change in year-to-year budgeting for a long time to come. Do you?

Gartner also recommended people leave Microsoft servers because of vulnerabilities.

The Gartner I'm thinking about attacks Microsoft every chance it gets. Beyond sense or logic. They're trying to create interest in how on earth they can speculate so wildly, though when their statements are investigated, I expect we'd find a lot of wishful thinking.
