I try not to troll
I was ASSUMING that if the computer was anything BUT Windoze, ZDnet would be trumpeting that fact. Even if main computers at Berkeley are Solaris, I would GUESS that many PCs are mixed in (Just too expensive to give everyone a Solaris box). If this database was on a main server, and it was broken into, then the fact that a researcher was using it would not be mentioned - since it didn't reside on his personal computer. So, by reading in-between the lines, I can SURMISE that this researcher had a PC, and connected it to the internet (probably so he could access it from home), and HOPED that no-one would notice. I suppose that if THAT were true, he could be fired for violating policy.
