one opinion
obviously, you and i have different opinions. while neither is necessarily wrong, you cannot make the statements you made.

'
mozilla stands to lose face here
Not really. They are, after all, fixing the bug. OK, fixing it faster would be nice, but it's not the end of the word. I doubt they will lose too many customers over this.'

ok, they have lost face with me. i am probably not alone. no, it isnt the end of the world, and whether they lose too many customers over this is not the issue (is it considered a customer when it is a free product? more like, users, i think). they have lost me for at least a couple of weeks, and will have to regain some face with me. perhaps i am simply more concerned with being as secure as possible than you are. which, as i stated, doesnt make either of us wrong, and i doubt either of us is alone in their stance.

'
its a free product. standard business rules dont apply here.
Why not?'

uh, where to start? if it isnt obvious, im not sure i can explain it to you. lets start with the fact that they arent selling it. there is no standard business plan. this isnt microsoft, where they have to hit that golden ship date in order to maximize their revenues. there isnt even a stated definitive date here, just a goal. they might not hit it anyway. they have to patch the problem anyway, so why not release just that patch ahead of time? they have done it before, and overnight, i might add. why open themselves up to criticism and lost face, even if people like me represent a minority? there is a significant portion of their userbase that chose them based on their claims to increased security and the quick responsiveness of their developer community; why damage that reputation, even if its only temporarily and only a little?

'
to me invalidates one of their key features
IMHO, security isn't one of Firefox's key features. Sure, other people have been saying so, but not me.'

well, thats *your* opinion. i would say it is very safe to assume you are in the minority on that. the other features you list are important, but not more so than security. if microsoft updated ie to include all those other features but kept all of its security issues, would you switch to that over firefox? methinks not, which means that, yes, security is important even to *you*.
