I could give you reasons to have left it alone.
Your analogies are still flawed and I can disect it here but I only replied because you gave me a brilliant idea.

I could stop using floppy disks and start using CD's to do my backups! Wow!

...Unless you are talking about home users with overkill HDD who use all of 2GB of space on their 240GB SATA 150 7200RPM 8MB cache HDD of which 1.93GB is OS and App files.

Now, for the home user dabbling in photography, music or home videos, yes, CD's are an excelent way to back up there data or better yet, a DVD+-R/+-RW with dual layer, double sided technology. Buy what you need, yes?

Don't ever ask anyone on this forum if they know how many CD's they need because I think we are all smart enough to do the maths. Besides, you never specified unformatted capacities nor the formatting type of the CD's nor how much of that 200GB HDD contained vital data so we would have been guessing anyway. My guess is one. Was I close?

I just backed-up the data off of a 10GB laptop HDD for a friend so I can wipe and reload his system to get all the crap off of it. He was totally out of space save for approx 200MB. Total data backed-up? 1.1GB. Two CD's. Mostly scanned in BMP images at really high resolution. Reloaded his system with just under 2GB of space used and re formated his picture to PNG and all his data can now fit on one CD with room to spare.

Most of us are also smart enough to buy the appropriate backup technology for the right job. Optical, MO, tape (linear, helictical, open ended, etc.), tape library, removable HDD, Offsight near-line HD storage, etc.
