- Maybe I should have, but not for the reasons you give..

I suppose you're one of those people who thinks it's the woman's fault that she got raped. Because she dressed that way, she DESERVED to be sexually assaulted. If she would have taken the proper precautions, it wouldn't have happened.. why, she's downright NEGLIGENT, isn't she?
If he wore his belt (installed antivirus, firewall, shut off unneeded services before connecting to the internet) he most likely would have been fine.
I'd expect that of a professional IT person, but not of Joe sixpack with the latest Dell. I mean, an IT guy deserves to be fired if he doesn't take the proper precautions and valuable business data is lost.. but you can't expect the same of home users.
To the motorcycle analogy (not going to quote it all)
You could hire someone to watch the motorcycle while you're gone, and scan it for any foreign objects when you return.. so, really, I *do* have a good analogy here.. (as good as it can get with cars and computers ;p )
That's why I say virus writing in itself is not bad. It is not the criminal element that should be abhorred (for it will ALWAYS exist) but rather the intention behind the crime that should be considered with respect to how "bad" something really is.
No, the action (the criminal element) IS the crime.. the intention is only a mitigating circumstance that decides how much jail time the criminal receives..
That's why they invented BACKUP, my friend. If you don't regularly back up, you deserve to get burned! Period.
Again, the same flawed logic... and do you know how many CDs it would take to backup a 200GB hard drive? Not a practical solution..
As many people have said on these boards over and over, NO system that is responsible for anyone's life should be internet-connected. Period.
Agreed.. but what about systems that indirectly are responsible for someone's life? Like the computer of the lawyer of the death row inmate, convicted of a crime he didn't commit? The lawyer gets close to finding the answer.. and then, a virus attacks.. and the innocent man is put to death because the lawyer couldn't access the necessary information. - Posted by: d_jedi Posted on: 10/18/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
