OK.. I should just leave this alone, but I'm going to reply..
>> I personally don't think virus writing in general should even be a crime. <<

Congratulations, that takes the prize as the dumbest statement I've heard on ZDNet (or, at least, the dumbest statement that isn't completely off topic).

>> If you don't take proper precautions when connecting to the Net (a public network) then you deserve what happens. <<

OK.. so if I don't walk down the street wearing head-to-toe kevlar.. then I DESERVE to be shot for not taking the proper precautions? Ludicrous.

>> It's like a person driving a motorcycle without a helmet who gets thrown off his bike, slams his head on a telephone pole, and then complains that it should be a crime for not putting any rubber padding on the poles to protect bikers <<

That's a very poor analogy. If you insist on using a car analogy, it's more like a terrorist putting a bomb onto your motorcycle, such that when you start it, it blows up. Because that's what virus writers are, cyber-terrorists.

>> ut as for viruses in general, they really are small potatoes. It's just f*cking software! Re-install the OS and be on your way! <<

And what about all of the data lost? And what about if this software that needs to be re-installed is in a hospital? The point is, PEOPLE COULD DIE because of a virus attack hitting the wrong systems at the wrong time.
