They are in essence stealing life
In many ways these virus writers are stealing lives. Just think how many IT professionals have to spend their time cleaning up these messess, and how many people lose hours fixing these viruses, add them all together thats probably several lives gone from existance, time that they will never get back. Steve Jobs said when they built the first graphical OS for the mainstream market (first one was by Xerox) "If you make the computer boot 5 seconds faster you save lives".

But at least this way its not as horrendous a crime as murder or rape....
