If you don't believe you're going to get caught, the penalty is academic. As it is, computer-crime convictions already draw more hard time than violent crime.

Now, me, I have a hard time considering this kind of crime more serious than murder or rape. Apparently, so do most people (Don's favorite "95 percent") who don't consider malware to be important enough to use a more secure system.

So, putting two and two together, the "string them up" crowd seems to rate their own minor inconvenience as more serious than someone else's life. That's a persuasive moral argument if ever there was.
