Perhaps..

..not all of them are "sitting in basements". Maybe some are sitting at a cubicle at Symantec or Microsoft Corporation..you know, the old fireman setting fire to the woods to get some overtime thingy, only applied to the online world. After all, if countries nowadays drum out wars out of their magic hats (Iraq) to keep business flowing nicely (for the arms dealers, oil/energy companies, construction companies) then why would it be hard to imagine computer companies doing the same. No viruses=no business. Now you can retort with your green alien response..;-)
