I'm guessing the link is as follows.

Premise:
The people running software can't apply certain patches or their mission critical software breaks.

Consequence (1)
Because they don't patch, their OS is vulnerable.
This leads to some vandal taking their box and turning it into a zombie to apply DDoS attacks to other people... like online gambling sites.

Consequence (2)
The DDoS'd site is directly attacked through a system flaw that was left unpatched (see Premise). They can't firewall out the attackers IP address because the attacker has a fleet of zombie boxen out in cyberspace.
