Yes, it has been looked at
The vast majority of legitimate email traffic is stored and forwarded before it reaches the recipient, (think of all the corporate networks that try to protect their networks by having only one mail interface to the outside world) so looking at the sending/relaying machine's IP will likely not match the MX/A record for a domain name. The store and forward feature is one of the prime benefit (for reliability) and drawback of the SMTP system.
