Undeserved bad rap for USB ...
Apparently the sin committed by USB is its versatility and its ubiquity. As someone above has pointed out, 10/100baseT ethernet connections can be easily abused as well. Why, have we forgotten that one can easily connect a zip drive to a parallel port and transport 250MB in no time? Thats easily enough to infect a machine or enable an employee to walk out with critical data. Oh, so we use Windows (famous for its security prowess) to 'secure' the USB ports. An employee walks in with a USB drive and a mini OS on a business card CD. Windows security has been instantly and very effectively bypassed. A truly determined employee can these days simply bring in a small notebook with a SATA port and plug right into the machines hard drive. There are so many access points and securing them (which CAN be done) involves locking down a machine so thoroughly that it becomes impossible for the user to perform their daily tasks. Security is a two sided coin. The easy road to security is to lock down features. The REASON Windows has so many secrurity holes is due to the fact that it is LOADED with features. Every feature opens holes, its that simple, but most people just don't seem to get it. Thats why most of the security talk these days is mostly just pointless jawboning. It sounds impressive, but it has no substance.
