Guess what's the (current) biggest complaint I hear about Linux? You got it: most distributions don't automatically give the user plug-and-play access to USB storage.

The Linux hotplug model defaults to assuming that plug-in storage is just that: storage, meaning disk systems, meaning system stuff, meaning that users can't be trusted with it. You can override it by setting desktop priveledges for storage devices but the default is to prevent user access. Needless to say, people find this terribly inconvenient.

Meanwhile, MS (the convenience model that people are used to) is finding that it it needs to lock down plug-in storage devices such as USB. In other words, it has to become as inconvenient as Linux!
