David, two sides of the coin.

One could just as easily say the problem is open source. The truth of the matter is 90% of all users could have a solution tomorrow (figuratively speaking) had the proposed offerings from MS been accepted. What we have here is open source doing all it can to make itself significant and trying to find a way to participate on even footing with the for-profits.

The problem is that any for-profit can easily obtain a license and use this system, the ONLY group left out is open source. Truly a case of the tail wagging the dog.

In truth as I see this same issue (standards) come up every time there is a clash between proprietary and open source. Of course the open source community wants everything made available to them for free and without restriction, unfortunately the world just doesn't work that way and we end up with 90% of all users being held in limbo for the sake of the few.

Do I care if MS (or someone else) holds a patent on it? Not in the least. Do I care about how e-mail is going down the drain and is becoming more headaches than it's worth? You bet! And to tell the truth I would say most people feel the same way.

The saving grace is that for-profits see a need and where there is a need there is an opportunity. They will of course try to meet this need and a "standard" will come about through common use regardless of what a back room group likes or dislikes. It will simply take longer and the vast majority of user will have to wait longer than they should have. All for the sake of the disenchanted few...
