SenderID minus the contamination = SPF
Without the distraction of Sender ID we can get back to publishing SPF records.

That was and still is the main way of verifying the IP matches the Domain, Pobox are proposing that the header details should also go through an SPF check too. That was the only advantage to Sender ID - extra header checks.

The patent rights Microsoft claims it has are probably no more than a patent on the XML Schema used!? (Why else put a tiny piece of information in an XML scheme!) The actually checking in Sender ID was all SPF stuff anyway.

You don't need Microsoft to publish SPF records for Hotmail to use SPF. If at the end they do not publish SPF records for their servers, you can put them on an exceptions list, or simply filter them heavily as normal (probably a good idea in the case of Hotmail accounts).

To publish SPF records:

Enter the details of your mail server here:
http://spf.pobox.com/

This calculates a text string.

(Something like: "v=spf1 mx ptr -all" is typical)

Upload it to your DNS as a text record.
If your ISP doesn't support SPF, ask them to, if they refuse then switch ISPs. (Or are you happy to have email's spoofed from your domain?).

It's already supported by Spamassassin.
