Root is not protection
Linux stumbles around as a workstation/desktop OS because Unix was designed as a server OS. It has the multiuser complexities that a personal computer user does not need nor want. You can log onto XP as a reduced functionality user just as easily as you can do so with linux, but people expect to have full control of their personal comuters. The multiuser scenario is passe in this modern age.

Fortunately for linux, the same clumsy operation that interferes with the computer owner interferes with the computer attacker and linux appears to be less susceptible when it is really less useful.
