Would you hire an embezzler as an accountant?
This is one of the oft repeated and most foolish discussions in the IT industry.

* First, I would never hire someone who has shown such a brazen lack of ethics for a position of responsibility that could reflect on me or my business.

* Second, rarely do these individuals have substantial technical skills. Script kiddies and other copycats are the criminals who get caught. If I am going to hire a security engineer, I want someone with a breadth and depth of technical knowledge.

* Third, virtually every threat that hackers beat are well-known problems with established solutions (hey, how about patching your operating systems and running a firewall!). The "skills" that these individuals usually bring to the table are those of a mugger - they catch folks who are out on the Internet unprotected and behaving foolishly.

IT is not a game. It is a key part of the operations of many businesses, schools, and government.

We have to stop romanticizing and rewarding hackers and recognizing them for what they are - vandals, arsonists, and thieves.
