Nice Argument.. Too bad it's flawed.
'to protect ourselves against oppression...' - Well, not completely. You see, the guys that wrote the Consititution were really a rather wealthy lot, and their premises for doing all this were quite selfish.

Some documents that predated the Constitution, ones that helped to fuel the fires of revolution, shared one particular 'rallying cry', if you will. "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of" - Did you guess Happiness? Wrong. The original statement included "The Pursuit of PROPERTY". Only when they niced it all up to put it into the Declaration of Independence did they substitute the word "Happiness" in place of "Property".

The founding fathers were greedy, and they didn't want anyone to take their stuff. That was why they revolted in the first place (it even mentions it in the movie "Dazed and Confused", Rich guys didn't want to pay their taxes), and they felt it honorable and reasonable to allow everyone to possess weaponry to protect their stuff, lest some lothario come along a pursue THEIR stuff.

Now, I don't think that anyone should be able to just walk into a store and pick up a SAM, but I also know that handguns are useful for far more than killing people (having a sidearm while bowhunting is one invaluable example). The spirit of the Second Amendment is not dead, nor obsolete. I pray it never happens, but if the gun control advocates succeed in getting the Second Amendment repealed, Washington (if they aren't beat to it by the state governments) will require registration of all firearms and anything with a blade longer than 8". Then, once something else happens that lets the alarmists run the country for a little while, they'll come along and pick up every registered 'weapon' and they'll do it under the guise of national security. Of course, the criminals, the people whom gun control is actually designed to impact, won't register their weapons and will be the only civilians left with them. I'd rather have a fighting chance. After all, I want to be able to protect MY stuff, too.
