everyone has their crusade
I liked and agree with the quote about Liberty and Safety. However, I don't see disagreement with the Patriot act and agreement with gun control as being contradictory.

When we were given the right to bear arms, it didn't mean we could own a hatchett while the government could have a muskette - the spirit of the law was that we could own state of the art weaponry to protect ourselves against oppression, wild indians, and large agressive bears. This made sense in the late 18th century but today, state of the art weaponry is a patriot missile battery and we really aren't in much danger from native americans or large animals. Even the most avid advocates of gun control would agree that we can't allow every citizen to purchase a shoulder launched SAM from the local surplus store - this observation alone means that the spirit of the original law is obsolete. Moreover, hand gunds only have one use, killing people. I can support my right to privacy and my right to live free from the threat of murder by a hand gun in the same sentence with a clear concious.
