You are making the argument that Microsoft can't be trusted to
fix it's security problems because security upgrades are driving
sales?

Hmmm.

Sort of like expecting a cat to keep all the mice out of a cheese
factory.

Sure, it could be done, but then how long would the caretaker
keep feeding the cat ?

No mice might mean no Frisky Vittles !

I knew of course that the slowness of Windows 3.1 forced the
evolution of Intel's chips.

The 286 would barely run Windows beta at all.

The 386 was hardly adequate.

The 486 at least ran.

Then the Pentium. Then the Pentium Pro, a real improvement.
Then the Pentium II. Not so much, but whatever, it's only
money.

Then the Pentium 3, 4, 5 ....

Users would buy new PC's to get a chip fast enough to run
Windows. Then a new version of Windows would come along
and force another hardware upgrade.


Now, the cycle is slowing down. Only gamers still push the
envelope.

And M$ makes most of it's sales on new PC's. What to do, what
to do??

Security ! If Windows were perfect, people would buy a PC and
hang onto it for five years.

That's the average lifespan on Macs. At college, I saw Mac IIs'
still in use after 10 years !
