Half truth = whole lie
frankblank: i>Do you really think, I mean actually think (sorry for the dumb question) that, if linux were running on 90 percent of the desktops in the world, the people who do this stuff could not figure out how to hammer it?

Like most half-truths, this is almost as good as a lie. Yes, Windows' popularity is ONE of the reasons it's so widely exploited. The other reason - which frankblank has omitted either through guile or simple ignorance - is that Windows is inherently easier to hack than any of the various UNIX variants out there. There is, therefore, a much larger population of potential troublemakers for Windows regardless of its popularity.

This is not exactly news, folks. Plenty of technology analysts have noted Windows' inherently insecure architecture. It all gets back to the fact that Windows has its origins in a single-user, "personal compuer", non-networked environment while UNIX has its origins in the multi-user, networked environment. Security was a basic design concern for UNIX and its progeny; it wasn't for Windows.
