The fact of the matter is
that a denial of service attack is not likely to come from the inside, most anyone running a network would have the firewall block all accesses to Samba from the outside world. This is why the Samba team said that it was not a critical bug. Other than honeypots I doubt that any Linux or Unix networks will be effected by this issue.

Even if you are a Microsoft zealot you would be smart to learn how to set up a Linux server with Samba, it is faster than Windows Servers on slower CPU's and less memory and there are no licensing fees. If all you need is file sharing and print servering then you would be a fool not to use a Linux server for that purpose. I myself only setup Windows servers as domain controllers and application servers, I use Linux servers for email servers, routing, firewalls and for file servers. Microsoft distributes Unix services for Windows which includes tools that you need to sync user names between Linux/NIS+ and Active Directory. It all works fairly well together once you figure out the MS documentation.
