VoIP spam--it's coming

Another problem with landlines ....

Is the limitations of the phones offered to consumers. For example, I don't know of a phone or answering machine that will let me set up a distinctive ring for different people who call, nor can I program into my phone a 'white list', where people not on this list go directly to voice mail. A 'do not disturb' mode would also be nice, where by people who call would be told to leave a message, or press 1 to ring me if it's really urgent. Another nice feature would be to automagically turn on the DND mode after 10pm on weeknights. Or how about sending your boss to to voicemail if he tries to call yo on weekends? And what about call blocking? Would be nice to have this feature built into the phone without having to pay the telco a monthly fee. And it doesn't seem that most cell phones are much better. Though they may have some of these features, cell phone makers seem more content on equipping phones with digital cameras and allowing me to play Space Invaders and surf the web, rather than actually adding something useful.
I don't know if VOIP will give us any of these features, but someone could make a killing if they made a phone like the one I just described
