Depends on what you job is
I once worked a job were I did nothing all day. I was there purely to be there in case something happened. It rarely did happen but when it did happen they wanted quick resolution and couldn't rely on calling a person or having a contractor do it.

Talk about a boring job though. You just hoped something would blow up so you day would be less boring.
