Thanks for nothing.
Perhaps the RFID industry should follow Mr. McCullagh's lead and ridicule people who don't cleave to the idea of yet more uncontrolled habit-tracking being foisted upon them. Oh, wait; they already have, haven't they?

Most people do not care whether it is the Big Government in Washington that is ramming something down their throats, or the Big Government that is Business doing the same thing -- what they resent is having something rammed down their throats while their concerns are made to seem petty and ridiculous.

As to Mr. McCullagh's suggestion that Big Business will behave ethically and with honor if there exists no oversight of its activities, how does he explain the existence of invasive spyware/adware that has been crafted by or for numerous American business concerns? The majority of these applications install themselves on the hard drives of unsuspecting victims and report the internet (and possibly other) habits of these victimized members of the online public back to unregulated, often unreachable information gatherers who then do who-knows-what with said information.

I say that when the group of muggers that the information gatherers have become stops mugging us, we will stop behaving as if we have been mugged, or as if we are about to be mugged again.

And, we are not technophobes; we just resist paying for or otherwise supporting business technology that is going to be used against us.

(By the way: had Walmart been more up-front and open about its initial testing of RFID devices, people might not be as upset, right or wrong, as they are right now.)
